AMT Tech Report: Issue #316

AI in robotics control. Chef ADAM is robot. RAPID in short. Occupy batteries.
Jul 26, 2024

"I think that most readers fail to realize that today's science fiction is tomorrow's truth.”

1. AI in Robotics Control

By enabling direct force control with real-time feedback, AI and advanced sensors revolutionize robotics. AI-driven adaptive force control is crucial for precision tasks and boosts robot efficiency. Moreover, collaborative and autonomous robots benefit from AI for safe, efficient operations. These advancements are fueled by the growing demand for versatile end-of-arm tooling, improving adaptability and decision-making in dynamic environments.

2. Chef ADAM Is a Robot

Richtech Robotics announced the installation of their robotic beverage system, ADAM, at a Ghost Kitchens in a Walmart in Georgia, starting a rollout to 240 locations in the United States. ADAM aims to improve operational efficiency and customer experience by automating drink preparation, potentially transforming the service industry. According to the letter of intent signed for this rollout, Richtech Robotics will handle ADAM’s programming, and Ghost Kitchens will manage logistics.

3. RAPID in Short

While RAPID 2024 offered minimal groundbreaking additive manufacturing tech, the conversations grew lively around falling investments and revenues, corporate consolidations, and broader adoption. This article argues significant innovation is still needed for AM to “compete” with traditional manufacturing. What? How much more innovation do you want? And “compete” is wrong. There is no competition with conventional manufacturing. There is, however, an open position in the workflow where additive can be implemented.

4. Occupy Batteries

Wall Street is investing heavily in America’s booming battery storage industry because of course they are. Entrepreneur Sheldon Kimber’s Intersect Power is installing large batteries in Texas and California to store solar energy collected during the day and selling it when usage and prices peak in the evening. Despite challenges like market volatility and evolving battery technology, the sector is rapidly growing, driven by solar expansion, investment, and government incentives.

Startups can reveal where an industry is headed and what areas hold the most promise. Two key directions were highlighted in the recent Formnext Start-up Challenge: additive manufacturing in health care and leveraging AM for highly targeted applications.
What could the future of additive manufacturing look like? It promises to be efficient, local, automated, and immediate. In fact, it could look exactly like the jaw-dropping convergent manufacturing platform featured in AMT’s ETC at IMTS 2024.
New technologies don’t appear with the speed and certainty of throwing a switch. They grow, evolve, and then seem to emerge.
