With the pandemic continuing to disrupt supply lines and shifts in global trading relationships sowing more uncertainty, manufacturers are necessarily reevaluating their supply chains and making decisions on what they now deem “critical” to their companies and the nation. This is a crucial moment, and one that has the opportunity to shape the industry and our nation for decades to come. AMT encourages discussion by addressing the challenges and opportunities holistically, promoting a course of action to create a sustainable, healthier industry. The goal of this white paper series is threefold: explore how supply chain management and sourcing in manufacturing is changing; capture real-world experiences; and make practical and useful suggestions for the manufacturing technology industry. The supply chain and logistics industries are awesome in breadth and depth. AMT does not intend to cover all things related to the supply chain, but rather to discuss the manufacturing technology portion of that broader industry.
Changes in the global supply chain and the migration of industrial manufacturing plants away from the locations where they flourished due to globalization are causing a shift in the demand and supply of manufacturing technology equipment. Users and suppliers will have to reevaluate how they answer to the new realities and needs of the market, levels of the application of smart technologies, training and skills of the labor force, international trade rules and regulations, and safety and environmental standards. Suppliers will also have to make sure they satisfy the competitive expectations of the new normal: being agile, resilient, and customer-centric.
