The January Cooldown That Skipped 2026

Every year between December and January, orders of manufacturing technology decline. The 3.5% drop between December 2006 and January 2007 was the smallest recorded. Compared with other years, 2026 had the highest value since 2022 and ranks third highest for January since 1998.

With business investment up and growing strains in labor markets, several drivers are competing for the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision this afternoon.
